The Sitatex hardware requirements

With the coming of Sitatex V6 and V7 things have become really easy as to the hardware requirements. A machine with a version of Windows will do.

For the older versions it was much more difficult as you can see in below tables.

This list contains hard- and software information needed for the various Sitatex versions and connection types. Note that the list represents MINIMUM requirements and better equipment will often (almost always!) create better end-results.

STARS Connections

Recently a lot has changed in the field of STARS connections. There are two major reasons for these changes:

    • The release of Liaison 98
The release of Liaison98 by SITA was long awaited but it was worth the wait! This is a very nice piece of software which allows access to the Gabriel host system over X28, X25 and TCP/IP. With the arrival of Liaison we can forget all about the Attachmate software and we will at the same time have a suitable terminal emulator for use under Windows95/98 or Windows-NT.
    • The withdrawal of Eicon gateway software for Windows 95/98
Eicon withdrew the SNA gateway for Windows95 package because they think Windows95/98 does not provide a suitably stable environment for their gateways.
These two factors make the STARS environments much simpler as the only viable gateway solution is now the one running under Windows-NT. The layout then becomes:
Product to be used:Needed software: Gateway OS:
Sitatex for WindowsEicon SNA gateway V3.x Windows 3.x
Eicon OSI gateway V3.x Windows 3.x
Eicon Connections for WINNT Windows NT 4.0
Eicon SNA LAN gateway for WINNT (aka V3R5)Windows NT 4.0
Liaison 98 Eicon Connections for WINNT Windows NT
Aviva 8.0 Eicon SNA LAN gateway for WINNT (aka V3R5)Windows NT 4.0

It needs to be made clear though that when a customer wants to use Liaison98 he/she does not specifically an Eicon X25 gateway. For standalone stations or travelling customers it might be considered to use the X28 dialup option which allows to connect from a telephone line to the network.
Alternatively, for a large site it might be considered to connect over TCP/IP.

When combining services you need to use the following:

Products to combine: Eicon software to use:
Sitatex for Windows + Liaison98 Connections for Windows NT
Sitatex for Windows + Aviva 8.0 SNA LAN Gateway for Windows NT (V3R5)
Aviva 8.0 + Liaison 98 SNA LAN gateway for Windows NT (V3R5) +
Connections for Windows NT
Sitatex for Windows + Aviva 8.0 + Liaison 98 SNA LAN gateway for Windows NT (V3R5) +
Connections for Windows NT

Note that when using Liaison98 in a LAN environment you will need to have an extra Eicon package for each workstation. This package is called Eicon 32 bit client. This package will allow Liaison 98 to connect to the Eicon gateway by providing the LAN transport over TCP/IP or SPX.

GMSmail

GMSmail V3.1 Runs on any MS-Windows machine including Windows 95 and Windows NT Access protocol is X28 dialup but for internal use X25 and TCPIP can be used.

Eurocontrol

In Europe you will find a lot of connections to Eurocontrol (aka CFMU). Most airlines will have such a connection in order to provide them with slot information on when which airplane can fly where. There are two ways to connect to Eurocontrol:

  • RTA - Remote Terminal Access.
For this you need an X25 gateway with Aviva or any 3270 terminal emulator.
  • RCA - Remote Client Access.
For this you will need anumber of Eicon packages but you will also get an extra piece of software written by Eurocontrol. The requirements to run this package are:
    • Windows NT 4.0
    • Eicon SNA gateway V3.4 for Windows 95/NT
    • Eicon Aviva V8.0
    • Eicon Access V4.21
Note that two of these (SNA LAN gateway V3.4 and Eicon Access V4.21) are officially obsolete but with some searching you might be able to find a dealer who still hase copies. I am not sure if it will work with SNA gateway V3.5 for Windows NT but see no reason why it shouldn't.
I know for sure the RCA software does NOT work with any other Eicon Access version, not even V4.20, it has to be V4.21!

Comments

1 ) LAN needs the real NETBIOS protocol to run on the LAN, NETBIOS emulators like the one from Microsoft Windows do not work.

2 ) The partyline software does not function properly under Windows95 since Windows95 takes over control of the serial ports.

3 ) Practical problems arise due to the limited amount of memory available in such a configuration.

4 ) This version is no longer available for new installations.

5 ) For the proper functioning of Skyform at least a 386 is required and 540Kb of conventional memory is required.

6 ) For this gateway you will need the now obsolete SNAgate V3.1/V3.3 or OSIgate V3.1/V3.3 software from Eicon.

7 ) This works only with the Eicon connections for Windows NT or Eicon SNA LAN gateway for Windows NT.

8 ) This works only with the Eicon connections for NT or SNA LAN Gateway for Windows NT.

a ) For this gateway MS-Windows is needed.

b ) Sitatex for Windows X28 V2.1 is available (officially) for internal use only although it has been installed at several customer sites to overcome certain problems with V1.x or with the SDK. It is now however no longer available for new installations

c ) Gateway PC processor:

Number of sessionsPentium CPUGateway Memory
1 to 10 75+ 32MB
10 to 32 133+ 32MB
32 to 64 200+ 32MB
64+ 233+ 64MB
The user workstation should be a 486 DX2 66 or more CPU for Windows 3.x A Pentium CPU should be used with WIN95/98 NT

d ) 30 + MB for Gateway PC or Fileserver
1 MB or more on the User workstation if the config and folders are kept on local drive.

e ) This depends on number of Sessions for the Gateway PC
User PC - 8 MB RAM or more for Win 3.x, 16 MB or more for WIN95/98. Preferably 32 MB or more for NT 4.0

f ) EGA, VGA, or SVGA (Including Mono VGA)
